One of the benefits of the diverse experience at itaas is exposure to the advantages and disadvantages of emerging technologies. In this issue, we would like to share an overview of HTML5.

Advantages

1. Support for Audio/Video

A variety of formats (open and proprietary) can be used to integrate audio and video into applications or on multiple devices.

2. Standardized presentation and application environments

Optimized HTML5 code enables a single application across a variety of device form factors, screen sizes and orientations.

3. Can be used for both managed and un-managed devices

HTML5 software can also be leveraged across managed devices (set-top boxes) and un-managed devices (consumer owned mobile platforms).

Disadvantages

1. 2014 date for HTML5.0 “Recommendation” State

HTML5 is not fully defined and will continue to evolve and add capabilities. In the meantime, the “standard” set of features varies across platforms.

2. Browsers support HMTL5 with varying degree of functionality and compliance

Application functionality is not always consistent across browsers or devices and therefore makes a consistent user experience challenging

3. Performance of JavaScript is critical to success

Use of HTML5 on some hardware platforms (ex. set-top box) is a development challenge. Memory/Resource management is key.

Click here to check out the HTML5 demo of our PartyShots App. Though normally this application would connect smartphones to a Smart TV, we created an HTML5 web-based version for demos.

Give us a call to see more HTML5 examples! (marketing@itaas.com)

Perform preliminary testing to eliminate fundamental issues prior to arriving at internal test facilities

Allow internal resources to focus on most critical efforts while still progressing with itaas teams on other initiatives

Serve as an independent 3rd party testing group

Allow increased flexibility of testing facilities

Speed product deployment time, generating revenue more quickly and increasing customer satisfaction

itaas combines technological expertise with access to an advanced digital broadband infrastructure. This infrastructure includes the latest hardware and architectures required for testing solutions in multiple environments, such as EBIF, tru2way, VOD, iOS, Android and HTML5, as well as testing for QAM and DTAs.

We also offer a suite of testing tools to assist in solution testing. Additionally, our testing often reveals opportunities for test automation development from itaas engineering.

Cable operators can quickly deploy icueTV’s suite of interactive applications through the itaas iLaunch Program

CHERRY HILL, NJ and ATLANTA, GA March 5, 2012 – itaas, a leader in digital video software services, approved icueTV’s applications for their iLaunch program. iLaunch is designed to facilitate the deployment of new interactive services by pre-testing EBIF applications. Through this initiative, icueTV successfully tested its full suite of interactive applications on the EBIF user agent deployed by itaas.

Cable operators can easily deploy icueTV’s web-based ETV authoring platform which allows operators to create reusable EBIF-compliant application templates: t-commerce, electronic fulfillment on request for information through the “Click to Text” and “Click to Email” applications. The ETV applications can also incorporate in-program local advertisement through pre-bound and late-binding support.

“We are very excited to have participated in the iLaunch program, said Michael Huegel, CEO of icueTV. “Our success reinforces what we have known for years – that the icueTV platform is ready for fast track deployments on the itaas platform and many other well-accepted user agents. With iLaunch, cable operators have the security of knowing that much of the lab testing can be completed prior to full integration: an obvious savings in costs and manpower.”

With icueTV as a part of the iLaunch program, itaas will continue to offer their customers a host of interactive applications that allow enhanced TV viewing experience for consumers. Participating MSOs will also have instant access to an innovative suite of business and management tools allowing for real-time data analysis and lead generation tracking.

“itaas has deployed EBIF in millions of set-tops,” said Jim Elayan, vice president, marketing and business development for itaas. “With icueTV’s interactive applications available for immediate deployment, we continue to enable our customers to quickly add to their application portfolio, competitive applications to consumers.”

In line with Samsung’s commitment to spur development of new connected TV experiences, Samsung today announced the winner of its Free the TV Challenge 2011. This year, developers were challenged to create Converged Apps that allowed people to use more than one device to interact with the content on the TV.

itaas won the 2011 Challenge with its Party Shots app, an interactive app that allowed users to take pictures at parties and gatherings with their mobile devices and instantly push them to Samsung Smart TV. Photos may be turned into a slideshow in real time and users can also add captions and messages to personalize the content. Party Shots will also store the photos so that users can review and post them after the party on various photo-sharing sites.

“Because of the robust ecosystem that we have built, Samsung Apps has become the preferred launchpad for new apps and services. In fact, there are now more than 25,000 companies developing apps for our TVs, said Anderson. “As the number of TV apps and services continues to grow, Samsung will continue to lead the industry to broaden the type of apps available to deliver a superior, personalized entertainment experience.”

Party Shots and other Free the TV Challenge finalist apps will be available for viewing at Samsung’s booth #12004 in the Central Hall at the 2012 International CES, which will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, January 10-13, 2012.

Samsung honored itaas as having the most innovative application that brings together a mobile device and a Smart TV – thereby, “freeing the TV.”

The itaas application PartyShots allows consumers to take photographs on their mobile devices and immediately displays these “shots” on a Samsung Smart TV. A great way to add your own entertainment to any party or event. No more cardboard cameras on tables at a wedding reception!

If you are in Las Vegas, you can also stop by the Samsung booth tomorrow (Tuesday, January 10 – (Samsung Booth: #12004 Central Hall) to meet with Jim Elayan and to learn more about PartyShots.

This application relies on extensive knowledge of the connected TV development environment as well as the complex and ever evolving mobile device ecosystem. This diverse set of expertise along with our knowledge of the CATV and TV application requirements made itaas a perfect choice for an innovative consumer application.

“For the past 12 years, itaas has always focused on bringing technologies and platforms together to solve a customer’s problem,” said Jim Elayan, vice president, marketing for itaas. “Samsung’s challenged companies to find ways to “free” the TV – making it more than just a display for video. An interesting problem. An easy solution for itaas to provide. And, itaas has the capability to migrate this application to other advanced platforms including those used by cable operators.”
