The 4 other reasons for
EBIF

Recent focus and attention has certainly been on EBIF for targeted
advertising. The reasons are pretty simple. A larger base of set tops
can run EBIF applications and in the near term, the deployment of EBIF
is likely to occur more rapidly than Tru2way.
But, there are 4 other major reasons to launch EBIF applications:
- Revenue
Generation - whether advertising, up-sell, games or T
Commerce the possibility of increased revenue always drives interest.
- Competitive
Parity - Some guys have interactive applications already
and some guys don't. Those that don't want to compete on all fronts,
ergo, they need applications!
- "Web-like"
experience - There is a new generation of internet savvy
consumers that are coming to expect "web like" TV interaction that
satisfies the need for instant gratification that the web
provides.
- Increased
customer satisfaction - additional services and options
lead to increased customer satisfaction and a great "high tech",
progressive image.
It seems pretty clear that EBIF is a compelling way to achieve these
objectives and get things moving in interactive TV.
But what about Tru2way? Is it alive? Yes, as deployment of tru2way set
tops and consumer electronics devices increases, EBIF applications will
likely migrate with advanced functionality and enhanced graphics to the
more robust interactive platform. But it will be a few years before the
base of tru2way exceeds the EBIF footprint.
